Storm Floris is expected to bring a period of strong winds and heavy rain across much of the UK from late Tuesday into Wednesday, with the most severe impacts likely in northern and western Scotland where an amber weather warning for wind is in place.
Where will Storm Floris hit hardest and what are the main risks?
The storm will push in from the Atlantic, with the strongest gusts—potentially reaching 70–80 mph on exposed coasts—forecast for northern and western Scotland. A wider yellow warning for wind and rain covers much of the rest of the UK, including parts of northern England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The main risks are travel disruption, fallen trees, localised flooding and hazardous conditions for high-sided vehicles. London and the South East will see the weakest of the winds, but still some blustery showers.
Should I change my travel plans or flights?
If you are travelling to or from Scotland, or across the Pennines and Southern Uplands, allow extra time. Storm Amy weather warnings earlier this year caused significant road and rail delays, and Storm Floris is expected to cause similar disruption. Ferry services to the islands may be cancelled. For flights, check with your airline before setting off, as delays and cancellations are possible at Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inverness. Is Storm Floris the same as a named storm?
Yes. The Met Office names storms when they are expected to cause medium or high impacts. Floris is the first named storm of the season for the UK, and it follows the same naming system as the previous season’s storms.
Will Storm Floris affect England and Wales?
Yes, though impacts will be less severe than in Scotland. A yellow wind warning covers northern England, the Midlands, Wales and parts of the South West. Gusts of 45–55 mph are likely inland, with a higher risk of localised flooding where rain falls on already saturated ground.
